Hello Tatjana,

You guessed it! It's Chandi again!

Today is about one of my favorite subjects: Color Typing.

Once you know what scheme of colors you look best in, you can save
hundreds or thousands of dollars when you shop (you simply won't
even LOOK at colors that aren't "your colors"), you won't clog up
your closet or vanity with unused accessories (or clothes, or
makeup or shoes....), and you won't ever have to stress again about
WHAT color to buy, what looks good, do you have anything to match
those shoes.... Etc.

Nope!

Once you know your colors, it all becomes super easy.

People often ask me what makeup colors they should wear.... What eye
shadow shades look best and what blush and lip colors they need.

Selecting your color type will answer that.

It would take an entire book to fully explain this, but I'll give
you a quick run down.

In general, you will look BEST in either cool or warm tones.

Once you determine that, you then decide on if you look BEST in
muted or clear variations of those colors.

Usually these are broken down into seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn
and Winter.

Springs look best in clear, warm tones.
Summers look best in muted, cool tones.
Autumns look best in muted, warm tones.
Winters look best in clear, cool tones.

Keep in mind that warm colors have a yellow undertone, while cool
colors have a blue undertone.

SKIN TONE

To start, first look at your skin tone. Some people are obvious.
Like I have very yellow looking skin with green veins (so I'm
warm.) Some people have very cool, almost pinkish looking skin,
with blue veins.

The best way to determine this is to compare your hand or wrist
with someone else's. This almost always shows you right away what
you are. If you seem neutral, then go on the next step.

HAIR COLOR

Whether blonde or brunette, look at your NATURAL (or try to
remember!) highlights... if they are golden, you are warm. If they
are ashy (more taupe colored), you are cool.
(Redheads are virtually always warm, by the way, even if you have a
pink flush to your skin.)

Still not sure? Read on.

SWATCH TESTING

If you still have no clue what your color type is, don't lose
heart. It took me 2 years to figure out that I was an Autumn. It
seems obvious now, but apparently not back then!

So at this point, you need to gather up swatches of colors. These
can be anything; Shirts, jackets, skirts, paper, scarves, household
items or whatever. Just anything that is a solid color (no
patterns, as that might confuse the eye).

Hold each up to your face (with no makeup on) and ask yourself
which colors look BEST. Recruit an honest friend to help you and
go out into the sunlight if your house has poor lighting.

Okay, warm colors have a yellow undertone and include but are
not limited to:

Tomato red, peach, apricot, rust, terracotta, salmon, coral, olive
green, cream, brown, etc.

If you look good in those colors or at least a couple of them, you
are warm. If you find you look best in the richer tones like
tomato, brown and rust, you are most likely an Autumn.

If you find you look good in the softer tones, like the coral,
apricot and peach, you are most likely a Spring.

Okay, cool colors have a blue undertone and include but are
not limited to:

Icy pink, icy yellow, icy blue, black, white, cool pink, gem tones
like: royal blue, blue/red, etc....

If you find you prefer these colors, you are cool. If you like the
softer colors better, like the icy shades, or cool pink, you are
most likely a Summer. If you prefer the stronger tones, like the
gem tones, you might be a Winter.

Keep in mind there are some colors that virtually everyone will
look good in, like royal purple and teal.

TIP: If you can't decide if you are cool or warm, grab a black
shirt or object and a brown one. Hold each up to your face (with
no makeup on ... try to remember your natural hair color if you've
dyed it), and ask yourself which you look best in.

Warm people will look better in brown, while cool people will
generally come alive in black. There is a very subtle difference
here, so look for the color you look BEST in.

Again, once you know your colors, you will feel set FREE! No longer
do you have to worry about what might look good on you... you will
just KNOW.

You can even do the same with your style... determine your style
(natural, sophisticated, dramatic, sporty, etc), and you again save
loads when shopping, because you don't even need to look at certain
sections.

You just know you won't end up wearing a business suit, for
example, if you are a natural type person who prefers jeans and
simple tops. On the other hand, you won't buy 20 pairs of jeans if
you know you need elegant, formal wear most of the time....

This seems obvious, but many people blow tons of money on clothes
they like, not even asking themselves if they would ever actually
WEAR it, or if they have anything else to match it!

You will soon have your entire closet and makeup collection aligned
properly and virtually everything will match everything else. You
could choose your makeup colors and clothes blind-folded and they
would (for the most part) match!

If you are really interested in this, there is a book that will show
the way, even breaking down the seasons into 3 sub-categories each.
It is worth its weight in gold, due to all the money you'll save
from NOT buying the wrong color clothes, shoes, accessories and
makeup.

There are several versions of this book, but this one:
Color Me Beautiful's Looking Your Best: Color, Makeup and Style
is newer and is the one I prefer.

The reason I mention it here before continuing on, is because it
affects your blush, eye and lip color selections.

Tomorrow is about adding blush and / or bronzer for a natural look.

Till then,
